COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The Basic Critical Care Nursing Course is a five-day program intended to provide the new nurses with an overview of critical care nursing practice. It will present the physiological concepts that will be the basis of understanding the diseases and nursing assessment. The course will offer an opportunity for nurses to develop critical thinking by integrating knowledge about the disease, assessment, intervention and management. The course will have a four-day didactic and one-day workshop period to enable the participants to develop basic skills necessary in a simulated environment.

OBJECTIVES:
After the course, the participants will be able to:
1. Discuss an overview of the conceptual foundation of critical care nursing:

• Scope of critical care nursing practice
• Use of the nursing process
• Critical care environment

2. Describe the phenomena of concern in critical care nursing:

• Breathing, Tissue perfusion and gas exchange
• Cardiac electrical activity
• Regulation of fluid and electrolyte balance
• Pain
• Nutrition

3. Identify patient care problems through appropriate assessment in relation to the:

• Cardiovascular system
• Pulmonary system
• Neurologic system
• Renal system
• Multisystem

4. Demonstrate basic skills in utilizing the following:

• Hemodynamic monitoring
• Mechanical ventilation
• Neurological assessment tools
• Cardiovascular drug support formulas and dosages

5. Formulate a comprehensive plan of care for the critically-ill adult and pediatric patient.

INTENDED PARTICIPANTS:
Any experienced or inexperienced registered nurses (RNs) desiring to understand the challenges of critical care nursing and wishing to expand her knowledge in the care of the hemodynamically-compromised patient. However, it is preferred that participants have already attended an ECG course.

Critical Care Nurses Association of the Philippines (CCNAPI) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Training (The ABCD of Resuscitation) Schedule January – March 2011.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The course is designed for nurses who participate in the resuscitation of a patient, whether in or out of the hospital. Through this course, the nurses will enhance their skills in assisting during the treatment of the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. This course on the ACLS: The ABCD of resuscitation will emphasize the importance of basic life support – CPR to patient survival; the integration of effective basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions; and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation. This ACLS course is American Heart Association (AHA) – aligned program and will apply simulated clinical scenarios that encourage active; hands-on participation through various learning stations. This methodology will provide the participants with more practice sessions that is essential in building skills individually, as part of a team, and as team leader.

OBJECTIVES:
Through the realistic simulations, this program aims to provide the participants with the opportunity to reinforce the following key concepts:

1. Proficiency in basic life support care;
2. Recognizing and initiating early management of per-arrest conditions;
3. Managing cardiac arrest;
4. Identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes;
5. Recognizing other life-threatening clinical situations (such as stroke)
6. Providing initial care; ACLS algorithms; and effective resuscitation team dynamics; and
7. Identifying important concepts in post-resuscitation care.

Requirements:
1. BLS Certification of Completion
2. Basic ECG training

CPE Credit Units (CUs):
PRC: 21.5 Credit Units
CCNAPI: 24 Credit Units

This is a three-day course that will provide novice nurses with a step-by-step approach to rhythm and conduction analysis and interpretation. It will use methodology that will enhance the comprehension skill of the participants preparing them to appreciate the graphic interpretation and comprehension of EKG lines and waves.

OBJECTIVES:
After the course, the participants will be able to:
1. Describe the components of the cardiac conduction system incorporating cardiac anatomy and physiology;
2. Interpret and analyze ECG strips and determine, rate, regularity and rhythm;
3. Identify rhythms originating in the sinus node and atria, junction (AV node) and ventricles;
4. Discuss the significance of the rhythm and conduction patterns;
5. Recognize various degree of AV blocks with their significance and treatment;
6. Identify potentially life-threatening rhythms and initial interventions/approach to treatment;
7. Enhance comprehension and interpretation skills through workshop drills for EKG interpretation;
8. Landmark appropriately lead placement during EKG taking; and
9. Provide appropriate nursing action for clients with cardiac dysrhythmia.
