Intravenous Therapy (IVT) Training General Information
1. Basic Intravenous Therapy (IVT) Training
Intravenous Therapy (IVT) training is primarily designed to ensure safe practice in intravenous therapy to uphold the quality of nursing practice.
2. Participants in IVT Training
- Registered Nurses, with valid and current PRC license card or Certificate of Board Rating for new nurses;
- Certified IV Therapists who were not able to renew their IV Therapy card for more than five (5) years from date of issuance;
- Previously-trained RNs who were not able to accomplish the required IV injections within three (3) months from the date of their last training;
- Non-nursing health related professionals and technicians (MD, Post-graduate Medical Interns, Medical Technologists, Pulmo-tech, Registered Midwife) may attend the Association of Nursing Service Administrators of the Philippines (ANSAP) IVT Training program for nurses including the practicum. They will not be required to accomplish the required IV injections. They will not be issued an IVT license card but will be issued a Certificate of Attendance to the Training Program.
- Non-health related professionals are not eligible to attend the ANSAP IVT training program.
3. RNs are required by the law to be a certified IV therapist
The Philippine Nursing Act of 2002 (R.A. 9173) stipulates that the administration of parenteral injection is in the scope of nursing practice. ANSAP believes that the certification of IV therapist will be continued for several reason, paramount of which is safe nursing practice.
Moreover, an RN must enroll in IV therapy training because most government and private hospitals prefer RNs who are IV therapy-certified.
4. Training at ANSAP-accredited IVT Training hospital or provider
An RN should enroll in an ANSAP-accredited IVT training hospital or provider because ANSAP is the nursing organization mandated to administer and accredit basic IVT training for nurses.
Refer to the following documents for more information:
- PRC-BON Resolution No. 8 Series of 1994 (Special Training for Nurses on Intravenous Injection); and
- PRC-BON Protocol Governing Special Training on Administration of Intravenous Injections for Nurses
5. Registering for IVT training
An RN can register for IVT training in any ANSAP-accredited hospital or provider which offers basic IVT training. It is your responsibility to verify with ANSAP if the hospital/provider that you want to train for is accredited by them to conduct IVT training.
Registration and/or reserving a slot for IVT training depends on the ANSAP-accredited hospital/provider. It could be through personal visit, phone call, text message or online registration.
Admin note: You can view a list of ANSAP-Accredited Hospitals Conducting Basic Intravenous Therapy (IVT) Training here.
6. Number of participants per IVT training session
IVT training providers are advised by ANSAP that the number of participants should be limited to not more than 50, unless there are enough IVT training preceptors to conduct their individual return demonstration.
7. Requirements during registration for IVT training
- a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree;
- a registered professional nurse (RN), with a current license from the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) or Certificate of Board Rating for new nurses.
8. Registration for IVT training for new nurses (recent nursing board exam passers)
Some hospitals or providers will allow just the claim stub (the lower portion of the PRC Oath form) for the PRC license card which bears the registration number/license number of a new nurse.
9. IVT training fee
The IVT Training fee could cost as low as Php 1,500 or as high as Php 3,500. The variation in the fees depends on the hospital’s/provider’s calculation of the costs for the use of venue, supplies, honoraria for facilitators, coordinators, speakers, lecturers and preceptors as well as lunch and snacks for the participants.
10. The 3-day basic IVT training
The 3-day basic IVT training are the lecture and demonstration days. During this period, the following are expected:
- 24 hours didactic lectures on concepts of IVT training
- Practicum (return demonstration). Each participant is required to show competency in the following procedures:
a. Initiating and maintaining peripheral IV therapy infusions
b. Administering IV drugs
c. Administering and maintaining blood and blood components
d. Preparing and maintaining Total Parenteral Nutrition
e. One-on-One IV insertion under the direct supervision of a trainer/preceptor
- Didactic lectures pre-test and post-test
- Course evaluation (the trainers and the IVT training program as a whole will be evaluated by the trainees)
11. Basic IVT training grading
Each participant will be rated accordingly:
- Didactic (Pre-test, Post-test) – 50%
- Practicum (Return Demonstration) – 50%
If a participant fails in both the Didactic and Practicum areas, a removal examination may be required.
12. 3+3+2 IVT case requirement
After the 3-day basic IVT training lecture and demonstration days, an RN must accomplish the following IV cases as required by ANSAP:
- 3 cases of initiating/maintaining peripheral IV insertions;
- 3 cases of administering IV drugs; and
- 2 cases of administering and maintaining blood and blood components.
An RN must be able to complete and submit this 3+3+2 IVT case requirement to the ANSAP office within 3 (three) months after the 3-day basic IVT training. Failure to do so would require the RN to undergo the 3-day basic IVT training again.
13. 3+3+2 IVT case requirement completion
An RN may complete the case requirements at the following (must be completed in one hospital only):
- in the hospital where he/she underwent IVT training;
- in a hospital which offers case completion duty;
- if working as a staff nurse, where he/she is currently employed.
14. Case requirement completion duty fee
Some hospitals require a minimum fee of PhP 500 for the case completion duty.
15. Prescribed IVT Accomplished Requirements form
The prescribed IVT Accomplished Requirements format by ANSAP or the respective ANSAP-accredited hospital is the form where the 3+3+2 IVT case should be written. It must be duly-signed by:
- the trainers/preceptors who witnessed the completion;
- and the chief nurse wherein the registered nurse has undergone the completion.
Admin note: You can download the IVT Accomplished Requirements form here.
16. Filing for IVT license card, requirements and processing fee
The successful participant of the basic IVT training must submit to the ANSAP office or the hospital where he underwent training the requirements for initial issuance of IVT license card.
Admin note: Visit the Association of Nursing Service Administrators of the Philippines (ANSAP) page for the contact numbers, address and exact location of ANSAP.
The following are the requirements for initial issuance of IVT license card:
- a) Certificate of Attendance of the participant. (photocopy and original);
- b) IVT Accomplished Requirements form (accomplished 3+3+2 IVT case requirement), duly-signed by the chief nurse.
- c) Two (2) pcs. of 2×2 ID picture;
- d) Photocopy of current/valid PRC card (front and back); (Note: the claim stub will not be accepted as it only assumes that you are just waiting for your PRC license to be made available to you by the PRC. The same thing applies to the Certificate of Board Rating. It is expected that by the time you are done with your IVT Training and completion of requirements, you already have claimed your PRC license card.)
- e) Processing fee (PhP 400 – filed directly to ANSAP; additional fee of PhP 50 may be required if the requirements were filed by the hospital/IVT provider which offered the IVT training.
Admin note: You can see a sample of a filled-out IVT Accomplished Requirements form here.
Those who failed both the Didactic and Practicum areas may start accomplishing their requirements for initial issuance of IVT license card only after passing the removal examination.
Processing of IVT license card takes 3-6 weeks after submission of requirements at the ANSAP office.
17. Validity of IVT license
An IVT license is valid for (3) years for IV Therapy Nurses, Trainers and Preceptors.
18. Cancellation or suspension of IVT license
An IVT license can be canceled or suspended when:
- PRC license is not renewed;
- any violation of the Nursing Law (R.A. 9173: Philippine Nursing Act of 2002);
- IVT license is not renewed for more than 5 years from the date of issuance (the Registered Nurse must undergo the Basic IVT training again); and
- when there are violations in the Standards of IVT practice.
19. Requirements for renewal of IVT license (IVT Updates)
- Attendance to IVT Updates offered by ANSAP-accredited hospitals or Aesculap Academy Philippines totaling to 24 CEU (Continuing Education Units) as approved by ANSAP or,
- Lecturer/resource speaker on IVT Updates seminar or in IVT training programs approved by ANSAP (for trainers/preceptors only)
- Processing fee of Php 400
20. Renewal of lapsed IVT license (IVT Refresher Course)
If the IVT license card has not been renewed for more than 3 years from the date of issuance, RNs must undergo the 3-day basic IVT training again.
21. Lost IVT license card
A lost IVT license card may be replaced by submitting to the National ANSAP office an affidavit of loss, the corresponding Certificate of Training of the IVT license card or a certification of the Trainer that states the place and dates of the training attended by the participant plus a photocopy of the official list of participants of the IVT training attended.

I just want to ask if sa chong hua po ako mag training at volunteer ako sa mactan doctors or any other hospital which is not listed as ANSAP credited hospital is it ok if I will complete my 3+3+2 requirements in other hospital?
@gench – you will have to ask the hospital where you will attend the 3-Day Basic IVT training if they would allow you to complete your cases in other hospitals.

@RN – the hospital will usually provide where you will get your cases.
@Ivy – it depends per institution. Some will allow just the claim stub, some will not. Most probably, PHC is very strict with their requirements.
@lea – check the compiled training and seminars. Upper-right side of the site.
mam, ask ko lang pu, need pa pu ba ung old ivt lcense pg ngpa renew??or kht ung certfcate of completion nlng.nwla pu kc ung skin, eh mge2xpred nrn nmn pu xia.

@bevo – there’s no handout given before the first training day.
@bee – depends with the hospital requirements. some will allow just the claim stub, some needs the PRC license itself.
Hello mam Rona.. ask ko lng kung pwede ko pang tapusin ung IVT training ko if naitigil ko ung requirements sa pagpasa… ang problema ko kc that was oct 2009 pa ung 3day training ko… d pa rin ako nakapagpasa ng requirements until now kc conflict sa sched. Invalid na ba un? or need ko ulitin ung 3day training?
@Michelle RN – please verify with ANSAP what you should do with your IVT training status.
Gudpm ms. rona, mayron po kayang IVT sched this March sa Dr. Jose Fabella? kc ngcheck ako dto sa PND pero wla cla.pero nabanggit kc myron dw this march.possible bang wala lng cla sa list khit myron clang sched? thank you po

Hi,
I have a question po. Kasi po yung PRC license ko e under my Maiden’s name pa. di ko pa sya napapalitan to my married name. Will i be allowed to register and undergo the IVT training?
I hope you can advise me on what to do.
Thanks,
Joanne
@Joanne De Lasan – if you have your PRC license, then you can undergo IVT training. As for your name, better bring your documents (marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.) when you register for the training and inquire from the hospital themselves what you should use.
anong website ba pwedeng mag online registration for ivt training? confused…
A. Zarate General Hospital will be conducting Intravenous therapy Training (IVT)On march 17-19, 2011. for more details call 874-5178

maam rona ask q lng po kung madadagdagan mga schedule ngayon april 2011 lalo n poh IVT here at MANILA???thnk you poh
@samantha – posible.
@iaLet – yes? what’s your question?
@sarah – I think that will be coming from the IVT training provider. You will have to ask them what their IVT training provider number is.
@rose ann – Check in the monthly compilations of seminars and training (right side of the site).
Hello po Ms. Rona. Gud day po… I’d like to ask if there are other accredited institutions here in Dumaguete City that are conducting IVT trainings. There are a lot of nurses here that are very interested and are waiting for an opportunity and schedules of it. All we know is that only Silliman Medical Center is conducting such training. We are sad to inform you that they do not allow the outsiders/nurses outside their institutions to attend such training… I think it would be better if you will allow other institutions here in Dumaguete to conduct such training so that it will be fair enough for us who are not a part of their institution and are very interested to attend… thanks…
@ibe – check in this list: http://www.philippinenursingdirectory.com/ansap-accredited-hospitals-conducting-basic-ivt-training/
maam, im a candidate for medical clerkship (4th yr medicine) am i eligible to attend/join this training? im interested.
@Rose – yes you may — based purely on what is indicated in number 2. best of luck to you doc!
When will be the schedule IV training in BRTTH, Legazpi

hi miss rona. Do u know another sched for IV training in Vicente Sotto located in cebu city?? We went there last March but the head nurse told us that RNs who just passed the dec.2010 board exam will not be allowed to do the IV trainng. however, ive just learned that some of my batch mates were accomdated in their trainng last april 1-3 2011. im afraid that we will be denied the 2nd time if we’d inquire again in the said hospital. Are there any exceptions in allowing for RNs to undergo the training???
