Aesculap Academy Peri-operative Nursing 101 Oct. 1 – 26, 2010

Aesculap Academy Peri-operative Nursing 101

Target group: Registered Nurses

A basic competency training program which covers the principles and techniques of peri-operative nursing and their application in surgical settings, both local and foreign. It includes extensive learning of AORN standards and recommended practices as well as competency-based skills training.
The word “peri-operative” is an encompassing term that incorporates the three phases of surgery, namely the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative phase. Each phase will be tackled, along with the nursing process of assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation applicable to each.
This program will, therefore, effectively train and hone nurses in the field of peri-operative nursing and provide the participants with the necessary knowledge of the different concepts and guidelines of peri-operative care, as well as the experience and exposure to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment needed to be able to deliver quality, efficient, and excellent care to patients undergoing surgery.

I.  Orientation to The Medical City
This will orient the participants about The Medical City, its vision and mission, services offered, facilities and why it is considered as “The Capital of Health.” It will also include both a virtual and actual tour of the hospital facilities.

II.  Peri-Operative Concepts and Standards
This will introduce the participant to the role of the surgical team, the complex OR environment (zoning, traffic, temperature, etc.), OR hardware and surgical warehouse, sterile techniques, and universally common policies and procedures.

III.  Perianesthesia Nursing
This unit reviews the participant on the different methods and types of anesthesia, including patient preparation, intra-anesthesia care, and post-anesthesia monitoring. Emphasis is given to the potential complications at different phases of anesthesia and the preparedness for emergency required of the peri-operative nurse.

IV.  Care of the Peri-Operative Patient
This unit actively involves the participant in a variety of surgical procedures including minimally invasive procedures. As scrub nurses and circulators, they will assess different patient needs across life’s span, administer safe and effective procedures (e.g. positioning, using medications and solutions, handling specimens) and evaluate peri-operative care.

V.  Risk and Safety Management in the Operating Room
This unit comprehensively ties all concepts together to avert liability for injuries, break in privacy and confidentiality, and inappropriate documentation. Common safety issues in the OR are discussed, as well as professionalism and teamwork.

Objectives and Technical Competencies:
At the end of the course, the participant nurses will be able to:

  1. Understand the different concepts of peri-operative care;
  2. Assess a client’s condition and needs pre-operatively, intra-operatively, and post-operatively for the purpose of rendering appropriate intervention;
